KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Renault is working on a new sub-4-metre SUV inspired by the Duster
  • The upcoming model will sit alongside the Kiger, not replace it
  • Expected to feature a boxy, upright SUV design, unlike the Kiger's crossover styling

Renault's re-entry into the spotlight with the all-new Renault Duster is only the beginning of a much broader product offensive planned for India. The French carmaker has made it clear that it wants to accelerate its launch cadence, with fresh models arriving at regular intervals. Among the future products under consideration is a compact SUV inspired by the Duster's rugged DNA, effectively a sub-4-metre 'Mini Duster' designed specifically for the high-volume compact SUV segment. Senior Renault leadership has openly acknowledged the idea, signalling that the company sees strong potential in bringing Duster-like appeal to a smaller, more affordable footprint. Why Renault Needs A New Sub-4 Meter SUV

Renault Duster

Renault already has a presence in the sub-4-metre SUV space with the Kiger. However, despite a major update in 2025, the Kiger continues to post modest monthly volumes. One key reason is its softer, crossover-style design, which contrasts with Indian buyers' preference for upright, tough-looking SUVs in this category. This is where a Mini Duster fits in perfectly. By offering a more traditional, boxy SUV stance, Renault can attract buyers who want a compact footprint but with the visual strength and road presence associated with larger SUVs.

The upcoming sub-4-metre Renault SUV is expected to clearly differentiate itself from the Kiger in terms of styling. Instead of a coupe-like roofline, the Mini Duster is likely to adopt a squared-off silhouette with a taller stance, prominent wheel arches, rugged body cladding, upright front fascia with a bold grille, roof rails, and chunky alloy wheels for added presence. The design philosophy will closely mirror the new-generation Renault Duster, scaled down to meet sub-4-metre regulations without losing its SUV identity.

Interior And Features: Borrowing From The New Duster

While final details are still under wraps, the Mini Duster is expected to share several interior and technology elements with the new Duster. This could include a modern touchscreen infotainment system along with a digital instrument cluster, 6 airbags, and connected car technology, along with enhanced safety features compared to the Kiger. Renault's goal will be to position the Mini Duster as a more premium and robust alternative within its own lineup, without overlapping too heavily with the Kiger.

Engine And Gearbox Options

Under the bonnet, the Mini Duster is expected to use Renault's familiar 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, already seen on the Kiger. This motor delivers around 100 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a manual and a CVT. This approach helps Renault keep costs under control while offering a powertrain that is already well-suited to urban and highway use.

Expected Launch Timeline

The Mini Duster is not expected to arrive immediately. Renault's current priority is the rollout of the standard Duster, followed by its upcoming 7-seat derivative. Only after these models are established will the compact SUV enter the picture. At present, a 2027-2028 launch window appears most likely.

Verdict

A sub-4-metre SUV could prove to be a turning point for Renault in India. By combining rugged SUV styling, proven powertrains, and modern features in a compact package, Renault has the opportunity to address a segment where volumes truly matter. If the brand manages to price it competitively and differentiate it clearly from the Kiger, the Mini Duster could become Renault's strongest mass-market product in years, and a crucial pillar in its India revival strategy.
