Tata Harrier Petrol Spied Testing

Tata Motors appears to be in the final stages of testing the much-anticipated petrol-powered Tata Harrier, with the SUV recently spotted at a fuel station near Lonavala, hinting at an imminent launch. The test mule, caught under camouflage, looked nearly identical to the current diesel Harrier, confirming Tata's intention to retain the familiar design language, which is also the normal occurrence. According to sources who interacted with the test driver, the vehicle is indeed the petrol version, marking a significant shift in Tata's D-segment strategy.

The petrol Harrier is expected to carry a more competitive base price compared to the diesel variant, which currently starts at Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). With this move, Tata aims to broaden the Harrier's appeal and tap into a wider customer base in the premium SUV segment. Notably, the petrol-powered variant will be more affordable; it remains to be seen how it scores on fuel economy, given the fact that petrol mills generally deliver a lower efficiency.
1.5L Turbo Petrol In Sight

Tata Motors' upcoming 1.5-litre turbocharged GDI petrol engine, developed in-house, is poised to be a game-changer for the brand's SUV portfolio, particularly the Harrier and Safari. This 4-cylinder unit, capable of producing 170 PS and 280 Nm, was first previewed at the Auto Expo and is expected to make its production debut soon. Not only does the in-house development help keep costs in check after initial R&D, but it also positions Tata to competitively price these petrol variants, potentially undercutting rivals like the Mahindra XUV700 and MG Hector. Transmission options are expected to include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCA, adding more flexibility for buyers.
As for the launch, it is expected to debut around the festive season and will be an alternative for those looking to own a petrol SUV for a longer timeframe.
Verdict
Tata Harrier has been a decent seller but the current diesel woes continue to deter new buyers who are slowly making peace with the fact that they need to look out for a petrol powered SUV. This specific section will benefit heavily from the new powertrain option. But it has a lot riding on it in terms of how it will be priced and how efficient it can be on the roads.
