Toyota's New Upcoming Sub-4 Meter Compact Crossover SUV: All Details

The Japanese carmaker Toyota has been on a roll for some time now in India. The brand launched its mid-size SUV Urban Cruiser Hyryder and premium MPV Innova Hycross in India last year. It also reintroduced the Innova Crysta Diesel last month. However, the major missing product in the brand's lineup has been a sub-4 meter compact SUV. Toyota previously use to have the Urban Cruiser in this segment, but it was discontinued last year by the brand. Well, according to some media reports, Toyota is all set to bring a new sub-4 meter compact crossover SUV to rival the likes of Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, etc. Codenamed A15, the new sub-4 meter SUV from Toyota will be based on the newly introduced Maruti Suzuki Fronx. However, it will carry several design and interior changes to differentiate it from the Maruti sibling. Here we have discussed all the details about the upcoming SUV from Toyota.

Toyota A15 Compact Crossover SUV: What To Expect?

Though the upcoming compact crossover SUV from Toyota will be based on Maruti Fronx, Toyota is expected to do some exterior design changes. The compact SUV will most probably get an Urban Cruiser Hyryder-inspired front facia with LED DRLs placed above the headlamps. On the other hand, the rear end of the SUV would be inspired by the Yaris Cross. Yaris Cross is a crossover from Toyota available in some international markets. Also, at the rear, Toyota is likely to retain the connected LED light bar design of Fronx. As a matter of fact, the Toyota Yaris Cross has already been spotted several times during its testing on Indian roads.

Toyota's new compact SUV is expected to get the same interior as the Maruti Fronx, although Toyota might change the interior color scheme and seat fabric design to differentiate the interior from Fronx. On the features front, the new Toyota SUV is expected to get features like HUD (Heads-Up Display), 360-degree view camera, wireless phone charging, wireless android auto/apple car play, cruise control, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 6 speaker audio setup, auto climate control AC, auto-dimming IRVM, rear AC vents, tilt & telescopic steering, connected car tech, etc. On the safety front, apart from ABS, EBD & dual airbags, the new Toyota SUV might get 6 airbags, ESP, and hill hold as standard across all variants.

The new compact SUV from Toyota will carry the same powertrain option as that of the Maruti Fronx i.e. a 1-litre turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine matted to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed torque converter automatic, and a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine matted to a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT automatic. The 1-litre engine will produce 100 bhp of power and 147.6 Nm of torque, while the 1.2-litre engine will generate 90 bhp of power and 113 Nm of torque.

Verdict: Being a Toyota product, the new A15 compact SUV is also expected to offer a better standard warranty package and aftersales support compared to its sibling Maruti Fronx. Being based on Maruti Fronx and inspired by the design of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Yaris Cross, the new compact SUV from Toyota will be an interesting mixture of three different vehicles from three different segments.
