KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Maruti Suzuki Celerio evaluated with 2-airbag and 6-airbag configurations under updated Global NCAP protocols
- 6-airbag version scores higher, yet unstable bodyshell caps overall ratings
- Absence of ISOFIX and limited CRS compatibility affect child occupant scores
Global NCAP has published the latest crash test results for the India-made Maruti Celerio, assessing both the two-airbag and six-airbag variants under its current testing protocols. The results highlight a noticeable improvement with added airbags, but also underline fundamental structural limitations that continue to cap the hatchback's overall safety performance. Tested models were manufactured in India, and the ratings apply specifically to Celerio vehicles sold in the Indian market. Maruti Celerio Global NCAP Crash Test Rating- Scores 3 Stars

In Global NCAP's frontal offset crash test, the six-airbag Maruti Celerio achieved a 3-star rating for Adult Occupant Protection, scoring 18.04 points out of 34. Protection for the head and neck of both the driver and front passenger was rated adequate, while driver chest protection was marked as weak. Knee protection was assessed as marginal due to possible contact with hard structures behind the dashboard.

Despite the presence of side and curtain airbags, Global NCAP rated the bodyshell as unstable, indicating limited ability to handle higher crash loads. This structural limitation played a major role in preventing a higher adult safety score. The two-airbag version, in comparison, secured a 2-star adult safety rating, delivering similar frontal protection outcomes but without the benefit of added side impact cushioning.

For Child Occupant Protection, the six-airbag Celerio scored 18.57 points out of 49, resulting in a 2-star rating. Global NCAP observed limited protection for both the 18-month-old and 3-year-old child dummies in frontal impact tests when child seats were installed using adult seatbelts. The absence of ISOFIX anchorages and the lack of a front passenger airbag cut-off switch affected compatibility with child restraint systems. The two-airbag version performed significantly worse, managing only a 1-star child safety rating, largely due to poor frontal impact protection and restraint limitations.
Powertrain Remains Unchanged

Mechanically, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio continues with its familiar setup. It is powered by a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, producing 67 bhp and 91.1 Nm of torque, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. No changes were made to the powertrain for the tested models.
Verdict
The latest Global NCAP results show that the 6 airbag Maruti Celerio is safer than before, particularly in side impact scenarios. However, structural instability and weak child occupant protection prevent it from delivering the level of safety buyers increasingly expect and also what Maruti has been offering from its latest launches. The message is clear, while adding airbags is a positive step, future safety gains will depend on platform-level improvements, stronger body structures, and better child restraint integration. Until then, the Celerio's crash safety remains adequate.
