Maruti Suzuki Brezza

At a starting price of Rs. 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the most affordable mild hybrid car you can buy right now in India. Powered the sub-compact SUV is a 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine putting out 1`03 bhp and 136.8 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to the option of a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The four-wheeler uses the brand's Progressive Smart Hybrid Technology with ISS (Ideal Start Stop), torque assist and brake energy regeneration.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and XL6

The Maruti Suzuki MPV twins, Ertiga and XL6 also come with mild hybrid technology. The price range of Ertiga starts from Rs. 8.35 lakh (ex-showroom), while the XL6 entry level will set you back by Rs. 11.29 lakh (ex-showroom). Both the MPVs share the same underpinnings as well as powertrain combinations. The 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine puts out 1`03 bhp and 136.8 Nm of peak torque and it is mated to the option of a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The familiar Progressive Smart Hybrid Technology with ISS (Ideal Start Stop), torque assist and brake energy regeneration is also used in these MPVs.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

The only sedan on this list is the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. The price range of this mid-size sedan starts from Rs. 8.99 lakh and extends all the way up to Rs. 11.98 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike the other cars in the brand's stable, the Ciaz uses the older 1.5 litre K15B petrol engine, with power output rated at 103 bhp and 138 Nm of peak torque. The transmission option on offer includes a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque converter automatic unit. The sedan also uses the similar Maruti Suzuki's Smart Hybrid Technology.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser are jointly developed under the Maruti-Toyota JV and share an array of components like platform, powertrain, tech features and more. The starting price of the Grand Vitara is Rs. 10.45 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Urban Cruiser Hyryder base trim comes at a sticker price of Rs. 10.48 lakh (ex-showroom). The 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine on both the mid-size SUVs produces 103 bhp and 136.8 Nm of peak torque, mated to the option of a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The Maruti Suzuki's Smart Hybrid Technology is common across both four-wheelers.

MG Hector and Hector Plus

Mild Hybrid Cars

The petrol mild hybrid range of Hector and Hector Plus starts from Rs. 17.40 lakh and Rs. 16.44 lakh (both prices ex-showroom) respectively. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine puts out 143 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque, paired to a 48V mild hybrid system. The mild hybrid only comes with the option of a 6-speed manual transmission.

Verdict: The mild hybrid segment under the Rs. 20 lakh price bracket is majorly occupied by Maruti Suzuki. Other car manufacturers should also bring this efficient technology on board in order to increase the efficiency as well as power delivery of their petrol powertrains. Being quite affordable and easy to implement in vehicles, the mild hybrid system is a boon in this ICE to EV transition stage and gives a host of benefits to the customers.
