MG Hector Hawk EV Spied Undisguised: What to Expect

JSW MG Motor India's next big electric play has been caught completely out in the open, just days before its scheduled reveal. The company's upcoming seven-seat electric SUV, expected to carry the Hector Hawk name, though a "Hector Tomahawk" badge is also doing the rounds, was recently photographed without any camouflage on public roads, reportedly during a commercial shoot. With an official unveiling scheduled for August 26 and a market launch expected to follow in September, these sightings leave very little to guesswork about how the finished product will look and what it might bring to the table. Here are full details of what the spy shots reveal, and what else we know so far.

Design

The test vehicle was seen wearing an olive green paint job finished off with a contrasting gloss-black roof, black roof rails, and dual-tone alloy wheels with a swirl-style pattern. This is a notable change from earlier camouflaged prototypes, where the wheels were still masked.

Up front, the SUV carries a closed-off panel in place of a conventional grille, standard practice for EVs, flanked by sharp, rectangular LED headlamps and a twin-strip LED daytime running light setup. A chrome-finished trim piece connects the headlamps and houses the MG roundel at the centre, while the bumper gets a two-tone treatment with vertical slats on either side for aerodynamic efficiency.

Viewed from the side, the SUV cuts a fairly boxy, upright profile in keeping with the rest of the Hector family. Chrome door handles and a chrome window surround (which kicks upward near the D-pillar) add a bit of visual flourish, while black cladding runs along the wheel arches and lower doors, extending into the rear bumper. A panoramic sunroof is visible on the roof as well. The rear hasn't been photographed in full yet, but based on earlier teaser material, expect wraparound LED tail lamps, a large integrated spoiler and a two-tone bumper treatment that mirrors the front-end styling.

Dimensionally, the SUV is expected to stretch close to 4.7 metres in length and ride on a wheelbase in the region of 2,810mm - figures that place it firmly in the mid-size, three-row SUV bracket, well above the five-seat Astor and ZS EV in MG's lineup.

MG Hector Hawk: What's Inside the Cabin

None of the recent spy shots have captured the interior, but MG's own promotional teasers have already given away the broad strokes. What you can expect is a light, beige-toned cabin finished to a fairly premium standard, built around a twin-screen layout: a digital instrument cluster paired with a larger touchscreen infotainment display, along with a two-spoke steering wheel.

Given MG's recent India launches, the feature list is likely to be generous. Expect a large touchscreen in the 12-13 inch range, a digital driver's display, a wireless phone charger, a powered tailgate, leatherette upholstery, ventilated and powered front seats, multi-zone automatic climate control with vents for the second and third rows, ambient lighting, and a 360-degree camera system. On the safety front, MG is expected to load this SUV up with an ADAS suite, multiple airbags, electronic stability control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, hill hold assist, and all-round disc brakes features that are increasingly becoming table stakes in this price bracket.

Powertrain

MG hasn't officially detailed the powertrain, but the SUV is based on a global platform already sold overseas as the Wuling Starlight/Eksion, which gives us a fairly reliable set of numbers to work with.

Expect a single electric motor producing somewhere around 200PS and roughly 310Nm of torque, paired with a battery pack in the 69kWh range (some reports suggest a smaller 56.7kWh option could also be offered, though this hasn't been confirmed for India). Range on the CLTC cycle is pegged at over 500km, and a "500 km+" sticker spotted on an earlier test mule seems to back this up. Whether MG brings over a single battery configuration or offers a choice, as is done overseas, remains to be seen.

Launch Timeline and Expected Pricing

MG has scheduled the SUV's official unveiling for August 26, with a commercial launch expected to follow within a few weeks. Given its positioning as a mid-size, three-row electric SUV, pricing is widely expected to fall somewhere between Rs 18 lakh and Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom), though the exact bracket will only be confirmed closer to launch.

At this price point, it's set to go up against the likes of the Mahindra XEV 9S, the BYD eMax 7, and the upcoming Tata Safari EV, all of which currently compete for a share of India's still-nascent seven-seat electric SUV segment.

Why This SUV Matters

MG has built a strong EV reputation in India on the back of the Windsor EV and ZS EV, both of which have found solid footing in their respective segments. This new three-row electric SUV addresses a genuine white space in the brand's portfolio: a seven-seat EV slotting between the compact Windsor/ZS twins and the far pricier M9 MPV.

With rivals like the Mahindra XEV 9S already carving out a strong position on pricing, MG will need to get its numbers right to make a real dent in this segment. But going by what's visible in these spy shots, the design, feature list, and range figures all suggest MG isn't holding back on ambition for this one. We won't have to wait long to find out; the unveiling is just days away.
