Tata Altroz EV Plans Put On Hold, But Can Be Revived

Tata Motors has one of the most comprehensive EV portfolios in the country, and with the Harrier EV set for launch on June 3, it will join the likes of Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Curvv EV, and the Nexon EV to make a more solid stable for the homegrown brand. With this, the question looms around the whereabouts of another EV based on the latest launch, the Tata Altroz facelift. While earlier iterations of the model missed out on a sustainable sibling, is that going to change with this update? Well, looks like the situation is going to stay the same, but the Tata Altroz EV is not being put to rest and remains in the backdrop.

Tata Motors has decided to put the brakes on the launch of the Altroz EV for now, citing saturation in the segment it was intended to target. According to Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, in a statement made to PTI, the company reassessed the need for another EV offering in the Rs. 8-15 lakh price band, where it already sells the Tiago.ev, Punch.ev, and Nexon.ev. The Altroz EV, which had earlier been revealed in a near-production avatar, was originally meant to sit in the Rs. 5-8 lakh bracket. However, evolving market dynamics, especially falling battery costs and the existing EV lineup covering that space, led to a rethink. Chandra noted that with three models already catering to that segment, a fourth offering didn't make strategic sense at this point.

While the project had progressed significantly, Tata Motors has hit pause, but not canceled it altogether. Chandra clarified that the Altroz EV hasn't been shelved permanently. The company may revisit the idea if market conditions change or if a gap emerges in the portfolio. For now, though, the Altroz EV's journey to showrooms has been postponed indefinitely.

The Last Of Its Kind Diesel Hatch

The Tata Altroz is the last mass-market hatchback to offer an oil burner, with the diesel phased out from this segment altogether. The flexibility it now offers is something that is not available with any of its rivals. The Altroz continues with its familiar powertrain options. The petrol variant is powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that puts out 87bhp and 115Nm of torque. On the diesel front, it gets a 1.5-litre four-cylinder motor producing 88bhp and 200Nm. While both engines come mated to a 5-speed manual as standard, the petrol version also offers the added convenience of a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Not to forget that it also gets a bi-fuel petrol + CNG powertrain already and a CNG AMT option is likely to be introduced within the next couple of months.

Verdict

Tata Altroz facelift has nailed its evolution, both in terms of design as well as the loading it has to offer. Not to forget the 1.5L diesel mill that still keeps going strong with almost 10% of the total Altroz sales accounting for it. As for the EV iteration, it is best suited to just keep aside for now, given the fact that there are plenty of options already available under the '.ev' umbrella. However, it is the 3rd June, that the brand will be looking forward to, as the Tata Harrier EV makes its official debut.
