Here's all that you need to know about Car detailing

The terminology "car detailing" is one that vehicle owners frequently hear. This article explains everything you need to know about car detailing.

What exactly is car detailing?

Car detailing is a task that preserves the car in the finest possible shape, focusing more on cosmetic than mechanical aspects. This is accomplished by cleaning the interior of the car of both visible and invisible impurities and polishing the outside to restore it to its pre-blemish state.

What all processes are involved in car detailing?

For detailing the exteriors - the following processes are involved

  1. Washing
A vigorous wash utilising a ph-neutral auto shampoo is the first step of the exterior car detailing process. The collected grime becomes soft enough to be washed off when the vehicle shampoo has been given ample time to foam.
  2. Claying
The paintwork is then clayed with the clay bar after being washed. Any filth that was not removed by regular detergents is removed by the clay bar.
  3. Polishing
Small amounts of clear coat are removed from the car's paint via polishing, which uses an abrasive substance. Small paint imperfections and swirls vanish as a result.
  4. Paint sealing
A sealant is applied to the car's paint to add a layer of protection and to give it a glossy shine. Wax is sometimes used as an option.

As far as interiors as concerned - here are the following steps

  1. Vacuum Cleaning
To remove debris, the vacuum cleaner is used on the seats, carpets and mats, headliner, back cargo area, and trunk.
  2. Scrubbing
This process is done to remove the grime on the carpets and mats
  3. Steam washing
This process is done for removing stains that are otherwise very difficult to get rid of.
  4. Glass cleaning
Mainly done in order to get rid of the stains on the mirrors and windshields. Done using a specialised glass cleaning liquid.
  5. Leather polishing
Any leather components in the car are cleaned with soap and a leather cleaner.

So what are ceramic coating, PPF, and paint correction?

These are some additional services offered by detailing shops. They mainly stand for the following

  1. Ceramic Coating
A liquid polymer called ceramic coating is used to provide a protective layer to the paint on the outside of a car. This is frequently used as a high-end wax substitute.
  2. PPF
PPF stands for paint protection film. A thin polyurethane film known as PPF helps shield automotive paint from various hazards such as rock chips, minor scratches, UV rays, mineral deposits, acid rain, and more. In comparison to ceramic coating, this product provides better protection.
  3. Paint Correction
This procedure eliminates surface imperfections like dull paint or rust from a car's paintwork. To achieve the best paint correction, the majority of detailers employ rotary machine polishers.

Can it be done at home?

While some basic detailing such as washing, rubbing, and interior vacuuming may be done at home - other processes require professional expertise, and hence it is advisable to get your cars detailed from a reputable shop.
